Honduras

Honduras is a sovereign country located in Central America. Honduras was formerly known as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.

Honduras spans an area of about 112,492 km² and has a population exceeding 8 million. Its northern portions are part of the Western Caribbean Zone, as reflected in the area’s demographics and culture. Honduras is known for its rich natural resources, including various minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, and sugar cane, as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market.

There are a selection of national parks in Honduras from Punta Sal National Park where you can relax on idyllic beaches and spot boas, tropical birds and sometimes dolphins to the National Park of Cuero y Salado, where the network of canals, mangroves and lagoons play host to monkeys, bird, alligators and famously, the elusive Caribbean Manatee.

If you are a diving or snorkeling enthusiast you will be in heaven. A day in Utila, just off the pier at Coral Reef, will prove to be a snorklers dream. The extensive reef breathes life into an incredible world below the surface. You’ll see families of squid, rainbow colored fish of all shapes and sizes, barracuda, rubber-faced blowfish and huge clouds of tiny irridescent fish.  Be sure to drop in to one of the local dive shops where you can arrange a whale shark spotting tour – these gentle giants are a major draw of the surrounding waters.

Honduras has a lot to be discovered and a lot to offer. Villa Hermosa Residential Resort is your paradise away from home or for those lucky retirees your permanent place in the sun, and all within just a few hours of the USA and Canada by air.
